Dudley's terrified because he's having such good luck. It's based on the general nethack karma principle, which is that if you have unusually good luck, something unusually bad is going to kill you very soon.

Yeah. I've had that happen. Found a magic lying on the floor on dlv 3, and I got a wish, and died 100 Turns later... |

Is this a reference to the musical "The Little Shop of Horrors"? |

No, little shop of horrors was a shop where the items could turn on the shop keeper...
So keeping speed boots and gauntlets of power is like a gun dealer keeping loaded AK-47's around. Add Mjollner and there it is a short lifespan ... |

This reminds me of when I went into a food shop on my first ever play of nethack, got enraged at the prices, and attempted to kill the . It didn't go so well as he paralyzed me, killed me with his , and I was owned. |

It's not a reference at all, you people! It's a continuation of the last two comics! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? |

If I ever find a shop with a , I will take the , then kill the , ignoring the alignment penalty for murder. |

And you'd have to be a total imbecile not to. After all the murder penalty is easily ameliorated by a few sacrifices; totally worth it! |

People keep saying that one can counteract the random number generator by always expecting the worse. This is simply not true! The RNG is like a compass needle; the further from the natural state (middle) it is thrown, the more it will swing the other way shortly after! Sure, your luck might temporarily improve, but it will be followed by some very bad luck that might negate everything good that just happened! Thus, the only way to beat Nethack would be to be completely neutral, and not care (but not seek ). It's a paradox, because if you don't care, you won't even start playing! |
