Wow, Dudley is getting topical, assuming the cartoon is in reference to this recent news item: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/ap_on_sc/century_old_whale |

Nice topical reference, and I agree with the crappy equipment comment. It's amazing how many suits of banded mail are laying about the dungeon compared to (even ordinary) boots, helms, and gloves. It's almost begging a stupid ascension trick... |

I think it was funnier before I read the news. |

Moby Dick? Yeah, me too.
And what's the stupid ascension trick?
Say, on a side note, can anyone tell me why Archaeologists lost the ability to identify gems automatically, and it was replaced by a ? |

It probably has to do with polypiling. Or else some conduct challenge.
As for the Archaeologist, it's probably the same reason as ADoM replaced the priests' b|u|c ability with the Detect Item Status skill - to give other classes a chance at it.
(Though I will say I haven't been playing nethack long enough to remember when Archaeologists could ID gems automatically - this is the first I've heard of it.) |

Nah. Polypiling would eventually make the banded mail vanish or turn into something useful. That's hardly stupid. A proper "stupid ascension trick" would be more like collecting every last banded mail in the dungeon and taking them with you to the astral plane, so it's listed in your holding when you ascend.
Other stupid ascensions tricks have included large groups of wacky pets, iceboxes full of strange things, a collection of tins made from all the major demons, and so forth.

The most fun ascension trick is to ascend with an ice box containing your girlfriend's character's corpse from either a bones file or the valley of the dead. Now that's true love. |

Of course all the good items are missing. The people who ascend took 'em.
Hee: Which character represents a pool of or moat or a pool of lava? |

Most hard stupid ascenscion trick is to ascend with every artifact. I saw a post about someone doing it in non mode, but it sounded so impossible... |
