it is unnaturally
quiet.

Actually, there has been an accessory for Nethack that added sound effects, a program called nhsound. If I remember correctly, it only works on the DOS version; it is a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program that is triggered by change in the topmost row of the screen, and plays sounds when "sound" messages are displayed. |

This one really grew on me as I realized I'm so accustomed to hearing chimes and ticks and the like from computers these days that Nethack does seem spookily silent. Even bank machines talk and play music these days, and I do wish they wouldn't. |

There's some patches for sound effects in the Windows version too, I believe. |

Think of how infinitely creepy that would be, creepy dungeon ambience in the background, and out of nothing you hear the near-silent pitter-patter of feet, or an army of ants. That'd be enough to make a grown man cry, I tells |

Some frontends had sound at least like Falcon's Eye (no longer developer) or Vulture's Eye (still developed). Also there is some code (maybe in Slash'EM only?) for using the PC/Amiga/whatever speaker to play the notes of musical instruments (like passtune to the castle). |
