Why is a hobbitHobbits are an unobtrusive but very ancient people, more
numerous formerly than they are today; for they love peace
and quiet and good tilled earth: a well-ordered and well-
farmed countryside was their favourite haunt. They do not
and did not understand or like machines more complicated
than a forge-bellows, a water-mill, or a handloom, although
they were skillful with tools. Even in ancient days they
were, as a rule, shy of "the Big Folk", as they call us, and
now they avoid us with dismay and are becoming hard to find.

h = humanoidHumanoids are all approximately the size of a human, and may
be mistaken for one at a distance. They are usually of a
tribal nature, and will fiercely defend their lairs. Usually
hostile, they may even band together to raid and pillage
human settlements.

I remember my first encounter with one. I thought helmet > mind flayerThis creature has a humanoid body, tentacles around its
covered mouth, and three long fingers on each hand. Mind
flayers are telepathic, and love to devour intelligent beings,
especially humans. If they hit their victim with a tentacle,
the mind flayer will slowly drain it of all intelligence,
eventually killing its victim.

First scrollAnd I was gazing on the surges prone,
With many a scalding tear and many a groan,
When at my feet emerg'd an old man's hand,
Grasping this scroll, and this same slender wand.
I knelt with pain--reached out my hand--had grasp'd
Those treasures--touch'd the knuckles--they unclasp'd--
I caught a finger: but the downward weight
O'erpowered me--it sank. Then 'gan abate
The storm, and through chill aguish gloom outburst
The comfortable sun. I was athirst
To search the book, and in the warming air
Parted its dripping leaves with eager care.
Strange matters did it treat of, and drew on
My soul page after page, till well-nigh won
Into forgetfulness; when, stupefied,
I read these words, and read again, and tried
My eyes against the heavens, and read again.

Hey kids, learn from Nesman's example! Remember to greaseANOINT, v.t. To grease a king or other great functionary
already sufficiently slippery.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Or 90%, in nethack.

. Never met one of these before -- let's try melee fighting it as a wizardEbenezum walked before me along the closest thing we could
find to a path in these overgrown woods. Every few paces he
would pause, so that I, burdened with a pack stuffed with
arcane and heavy paraphernalia, could catch up with his
wizardly strides. He, as usual, carried nothing, preferring,
as he often said, to keep his hands free for quick conjuring
and his mind free for the thoughts of a mage.

Knowing is half the battle? 90% of the battle? I'm sorry, in Nethack, knowing will only get you the first 5% of the way. After that it's 90% luck interspersed with a failproof strategy.

once. I never got to fight it, as I got the psychic blast and used ESP to see it, then ran. Barbarians are not good at fighting them, I thought. It disappeared! I don't know what happened. I thought perhaps it died from a trap, but no damaging traps! No poly or level traps either. It just... disassembled itself.
