I get it, but it's a bit too obscure to be really funny. It refers to the "boy who cried wolfThe ancestors of the modern day domestic dog, wolves are

down prey.

Well, I liked it. Shame Dudley didn't indignantly wipe the floor with them though: those guards are always pissing me off by getting in my way when I'm in hot pursuit with a fresh kill for the altarAltars are of three types:

top will have grooves for blood, and the whole will be covered
with _dry brown stains of a troubling kind_ from former
Sacrifices.

And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds

No, I'm aware that this references the boy-who-cried-wolfThe ancestors of the modern day domestic dog, wolves are
powerful muscular animals with bushy tails. Intelligent,

story, but I am unsure how it's being referenced--is it being referenced to make fun of this situation, or is it being fit to this situation to make fun of the reference, or is it just a non sequitur?

Indeed it do. Who could've seen that one coming?

Anyway, I must admit that the punchline lacked punch for me as well, and I wrote the thing... In retrospect this doesn't even make the joke that I wanted to make, and I can think of a different way to say it that would make a lot more sense. Oh, well.

OW, "this doesn't even make the joke that I wanted to make". Clearly you had something in mind, so there has to be some way of stating it. Explaining without the constraints of a Dudleycomic might help.

The joke I was shooting for was how any time any member of the watchThese strange creatures live mostly on the surface of the
earth, gathering together in societies of various forms, but
occasionally a stray will descend into the depths and commit
mayhem among the dungeon residents who, naturally, often
resent the intrusion of such beasts. They are capable of
using weapons and magic, and it is even rumored that the
Wizard of Yendor is a member of this species.

blows any, ordinary whistle, everybody else in Minetown automatically assumes that it's Dudley and tries to kill you. Even if you lure one member way off to the side and then start to kill him, just so long as he manages to blow his whistle once, everybody else is out to get Dudley's head on a pike with no explanation or questions asked. So what happens if somebody blows a whistle in Minetown and Dudley is just standing around minding his own business?

Thanks, OW. Maybe this would have been a good cartoon for O.J. Simpson's Dungeon. "But I didn't do anything, this time."

Killed by a whistle-blower?

Killed by an out-of-place football coach?

Nah...
