The problem with the "clove of " and the "sprig of wolfsbane" is that the purpose of these items is not obvious. They have little nutritional value, and provide negligible aid to the starving . The encyclopedia entry for "" is a quote from Dracula, by Bram Stoker, and provides little hint about how to use in NetHack.
But if one has ideas about or wolfsbane, then one may improvise. Was Dracula about the undead? Do undead monsters hate ? Then throw a clove of at that . The clove misses, and seems to have no effect. Use your mace to destroy the , retake your , and think of another idea.
If throws would miss, then maybe you need to wield these comestibles in melee? Okay, a group of wolves approaches. Wield the sprig of wolfsbane, and attack the first . You take several bites, and decide that this the sprig is no effective bane for the .
Maybe this sprig is a bane only against werewolves? You have the idea to wield your sprig against a werewolf. You expect that this might force the werewolf to form and prevent more summoning. You try this, so it fails.
Because cloves and sprigs seem so useless, you resign yourself to throwing them at dogs and cats to pacify them. One day, you do this to a , and as the devours the clove or sprig and becomes your pet. Thus you learn that cloves and sprigs are pet food! To learn anything else about cloves or sprigs, you would have to read a spoiler.
The above comic shows what might happen if improvisation with actually worked in NetHack. As you your breath kill the demilich, you feel awe to know one good use for the #breathe command. You remember reading about #breathe in the Guidebook, but you started ignoring this command after you tried it for a few times and it seemed useless. Now the useless #invoke command enters your mind, and you decide to try to #invoke the next sprig of wolfsbane. |

That isn't a comment. That's an essay.
It's a pretty good one, too... |

I tried wielding a clove of to scare away , which kind of cost me my life (in Spork).
It would've been awesome if it had actually worked. |

Or you might, tired of constantly turning into a , feel suicidal and eat your wolfsbane. I haven't discovered any use for yet. |

Marked down heavily for "You kill the demilich!"

Why all the nitpicking over useless details? It doesn't exactly detract from the value of the strip.
As for the wolfsbane uses, I didn't find them too confusing...anybody who is remotely familiar with werewolf lore would have at least some idea of what these items are good for. It would just be a matter of time before the figured out that they aren't useful as weapons. |
