Nice. Gives me a whole new perspective on Rodney.

For some reason, the representing of carpet as , is particularly funny to me.

Solid joke, tight writing. Maybe not exactly a stroke of inspired comedic genius, but they can't all be, and honestly this comes as a breath of fresh air after some of the recent strips... all that to say E.

CroesusCroesus (in Greek: Kroisos), the wealthy last king of Lydia;
his empire was destroyed when he attacked Cyrus in 549, after
the Oracle of Delphi (q.v.) had told him: "if you attack the
Persians, you will destroy a mighty empire". Herodotus
relates of his legendary conversation with Solon of Athens,
who impressed upon him that being rich does not imply being
happy and that no one should be considered fortunate before
his death.

probably gave them some nice financing terms for the refurbishment, too.

Assuming each turn is a second and Dudley is speaking on June 3, Rodney refurnished the dungeon on June 4, 2004.

In NetHack the dungeon shags you.

...but who knows if that turn counter has overflowed a few times after reaching 2147483647? As it's a signed integer, ancient things may sometimes appear having taken place...in the future!

NetHack, it boggles the mind.

Rated Excellent, because the scale doesn't quite go up to "why didn't I think of that".

I really doubt each turn is a second... You have players opening tins, reading books in several turns... besides it would make nymphA female creature from Roman and Greek mythology, the nymph
occupied rivers, forests, ponds, etc. A nymph's beauty is
beyond words: an ever-young woman with sleek figure and
long, thick hair, radiant skin and perfect teeth, full lips
and gentle eyes. A nymph's scent is delightful, and her
long robe glows, hemmed with golden threads and embroidered
with rainbow hues of unearthly magnificence. A nymph's
demeanour is graceful and charming, her mind quick and witty.

"Theseus felt her voice pulling him down into fathoms of
sleep.        The song was the skeleton of his dream, and the dream
was full of terror. Demon girls were after him, and a bull-
man was goring him. Everywhere there was blood. There was
pain. There was fear.        But his head was in the nymph's lap
and her musk was about him, her voice weaving the dream. He
knew then that she had been sent to tell him of something
dreadful that was to happen to him later. Her song was a
warning. But she had brought him a new kind of joy, one that
made him see everything differently. The boy, who was to
become a hero, suddenly knew then what most heroes learn
later -- and some too late -- that joy blots suffering and
that the road to nymphs is beset by monsters."

/succubusThe incubus and succubus are male and female versions of the
same demon, one who lies with a human for its own purposes,
usually to the detriment of the mortals who are unwise in
their dealings with them.

encounters much less enjoyable, lol.

Then again, you have players running from fast monsters in one turn... maybe each character is like 100 meters wide?

ah, screw it. They're characters and turns and can't be translated into RL metric system. Although I usually assume for the sakeJapanese rice wine.

of argument that an average 'turn' is five to tem minutes.

Oh and, excellent comic.

Good strip, was something I'd always wondered about myself.

Dav, time in Nethack is 7.5 seconds per turn, and is known as CNT (Admittedly, it's an extrapolation that requires some minor assumptions, such as calorie intake). See this link for more details
http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/NetHack_units

Therefore, it ends up being closer to 31 years time-wise. A bit long for a wood floor to last under normal conditions (let alone the conditions found in an average dungeon), but at least now you can probably understand why they squeak at you.

Regardless of whether it's seconds or minutes, I tip my hat to Dav. The geektech force is strong in this one.

There are still problems, such as resting/etc in 7.5 seconds, as well as forgetting a spell in only 2 days, regardless of how many others a hacker knows. I think the true unit for both time and distance in nethack should be NHINRLs, and a both a tile and turn are one NHINRL. HP and MP, also having problematic correlations to regular life (what with injuries) and folklore concerning magic, while referred to as HP and MP should also be called NHINRLs.

I like satire :)

This says the adventurer has to eat an entire meal ever 1 hour and 40 minutes! My super-fat brother doesn't even eat that much, and he's super-fat!
