When my starts with a of genocide, I like to save it for when I encounter a or a or a . The problem is the once one of the three has been genocided, I have no defense against the other two. |

I understand genociding ants, and I sort of understand chameleons (although I don't think I've ever died to one,) but hell hounds? |

Oh, and the didn't work because elves don't respect . I don't know why they don't, but it doesn't work on them. |

Okay, think about what you just said. The elves sing all the time -- they like the word, and use it to scare others -- therefore it should scare them? |

Yes, hell hounds. They're not particularly dangerous compared to higher-level monsters, perhaps, but they have a nasty habit of appearing before my characters can deal with them. That firey breath can kill a level-5 character who doesn't have fire resistance mighty easily. Chameleons are worse, because they can show up even earlier in the game, but they can turn into an illithid or a gray or an arch-. As for elves, they don't respect just because all @'s don't. |

If I'm about to die, when I start reading random scrolls and quaffing random potions, I nearly always read/quaff the wrong ones, and then find in my inventory I had about 3 different things that could have saved me. Either that, or I forgot to pray.
I've never seen hell hounds, even though I've had quite a few level 7 and 8 characters, going down to d.lvl 7 or 8 (which is the furthest I've ever got, unfortunately). |

Elves don't care about because it's the name of an Elvish deity, and as such its holiness drives away monsters. (Frodo uses it this way in LotR.) Elves clearly aren't going to be scared by the name of one of their own deities, and apparently this extends to humans as well. (Why it affects halflings but not minotaurs I dunno.) |
