The NetHack Index

And now the souls of the dead who had gone below came swarming up from Erebus -- fresh brides, unmarried youths, old men with life's long suffering behind them, tender young girls still nursing this first anguish in their hearts, and a great throng of warriors killed in battle, their spear-wounds gaping yet and all their armour stained with blood. From this multitude of souls, as they fluttered to and fro by the trench, there came a moaning that was horrible to hear. Panic drained the blood from my cheeks.
The Odyssey, (chapter Lambda), by Homer
(Entry on 'ghost' in the NetHack database)

Nethack is a so-called roguelike game which has the simplicity of a deux chevaux, yet a depth unseen in many other games. Indeed, it includes everything up to and including the kitchen sink.

On this page I try to include every source of information on NetHack I've found useful. This does not include pages in a language I don't understand (there is, for example, a large Japanese speaking NetHack community on the internet,) nor does it include pages that don't contain original material, but only have links to other resources (so my own page is not listed.) I tried to include every page that has anything of its own.

If you don't know roguelike games yet, I advise you to browse the Reviews to get an impression of roguelike games in general and NetHack in particular. Most other links on this page presume at least player's knowledge of the game.

This page does include links to information on direct predecessors and descendants of NetHack. That means you can also find information on Hack, SLASH and SLASH'EM. I do not list links to pages about Rogue, Angband or other roguelike games. For me, the NetHack family tree begins with Hack. If you want a more complete overview of roguelike games, I suggest you take a look at BALROG.

The Official NetHack site -- The DevTeam Main sites
Edited on March 28, 2003.
The official site for NetHack, although there are many other places where you can get a version of the game. This one is where the DevTeam itself makes NetHack available to the public. Here you can find old versions, the most recent version, and all known bugs in recent versions of NetHack. Should you discover anything odd, consult these before sending mail to the DevTeam.
The DevTeam can be reached at devteam@nethack.org.

The newsgroup: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Main sites
Edited on July 26, 2002.
A newsgroup dedicated to this game, which has a reasonably low volume (less than a hundred articles a day) and a lot of involved discussion about strategy, wishes for new versions and questions with answers. Dylan O'Donnell maintains a FAQ at http://www.spod-central.org/~psmith/nh/rgrn-FAQ.txt that is also posted bi-weekly.

Furthermore, there are links to lots of information sites and to almost all patches in existence here; and Ali saved copies of the famous Wizard Patch and Josh Fishman's version thereof. Patches

For anyone who has a compiler and some version of 'patch', their are patches for NetHack available on the web. In this category you can find links to them.

The Boulder Patch -- D. Stage Patches
Edited on April 17, 2003.
         D. Stage wrote the Boulder Patch and made it available on rec.games.roguelike.nethack. It makes wands of digging destroy boulders, since some people believe it is a bug that this doesn't happen in the standard game. Other people disagree, of course... Decide for yourself; a copy of the Boulder Patch is available on my site.

NetHack stuff -- Pasi Kallinen Patches
Edited on November 11, 2002.
Pasi created a couple of patches, adding objects (butcher's apron, whetstone), new uses of existing objects (wash your hands, flip a coin) and a configurable status line to the game. He also wrote a new level compiler and added some new types of rooms to the game. New patches appear often, so check his page!

Miks Lethe Patch -- Michael Clarke Patches
Contributed by Dion. Edited on August 23, 2004.
Similar to the Hell Patch, the Lethe Patch tries to make Gehennom less boring. It adds the fabled river Lethe and a number of monsters from the Cthulhu Mythos to NetHack, and adds items, monster behaviours and a lot of new or redecorated levels. Here you can find the patch and an MS-DOS executable.

The Wizard Patch -- Larry Stewart-Zerba Patches
Edited on June 30, 2003.
Larry Stewart-Zerba is the author of the famous Wizard Patch, with which a proficiency system similar to that for weapons is applied to spellcasting. This system is incorporated in NetHack since version 3.3.0. The latest version of the Wizard Patch as such is 1.0, and it is available on Ali's NetHack Page to which the link above now points.

NetHack Patches -- Jim Crawford Patches
On this page you can find a patch for NetHack 3.3.0 and 3.3.1 that adds highlighting to the status line. It will turn all important things (weak from hunger, low on hitpoints) orange to attract more attention to it. Furthermore, the famous Pizza Delivery Patch for 3.3.0 can be found here.

Nethack modifications and utilities -- Jukka Lahtinen Patches, Utilities
Edited on September 24, 2002.
Jukka Lahtinen has written two utilities for NetHack users, reclist and mergrec, both of which come with source and DOS and OS/2 executables. reclist allows you to see the score file much like nethack -s does. mergrec lets you merge different score files from game versions 3.2.0-3.3.0.
Furthermore, a whole list of patches is available from this site, among which are a patch by Trebor A. Rude to have objects in a container merge together as they do in you main inventory and the Extinction Patch by Wingnut, that shows extinct species at the end of the game.

GTK+ NetHack -- Issei Numata Patches
Apart from a Japanese version of NetHack 3.2.2, featuring a new character, the JNetHack page also has a version of NetHack 3.2 running under GTK+. This is a patch, so you need the NetHack 3.2.2 sources and a copy of the GTK+ library; but if you can compile it, you get pseudo-3D tiles (or at least 32x32 tiles,) and a 'radar' window!
http://www.jnethack.org/jnethack-e.html · no pageviews yet · Add notes

NetHack-related stuff -- Scott Bigham Patches
A big list of patches, most of them adding Other Funny Messages to NetHack 3.3.1. Also includes the Stick patch and the Preadjust patch to manage your inventory letters, and the Bagmerge patch that merges similar objects in containers.

Easy-jumping patch -- Wingnut Patches
Edited on September 24, 2002.
This patch was posted on rec.games.roguelike.nethack by Wingnut on 20/01/2000; it extends the #jump command so it casts the jump spell if you know it. This is a text version with human-readable instructions, as was the original post.

David Damerell -- David Damerell Patches
When I complained loudly on rec.games.roguelike.nethack about a game lost by quaffing from a fountain with Caps Lock on, David Damerell wrote The Paranoia Patch. If you apply this patch to a vanilla 3.2.2 source tree, it alters the game such that you can specify "paranoid_quit" in your options. Quitting and entering Explore mode then asks you to type "yes", not just the letter "y". The Paranoia Patch is also ported to NetHack 3.3.0, although quitting now is done with other keys. Additionally, the sources for SLASH'EM (a ZIPfile for the DOS source and a .tar.gz of the source tweaked for Linux compiles) are mirrored here.

Roderick Schertler's Nethack stuff -- Roderick Schertler Patches, Utilities
Contributed by Dion. Edited on March 31, 2003.
Roderick Schertler wrote a Hearse client for Unix. It is written in Perl, so it could work on other platforms as well. He also wrote some patches (the pickup_thrown patch among others.) He also created Patchable Nethack, which is a version of the source code that makes it easier for patch and diff to solve conflicts between patches.

Auto-NetHack -- Tom Wilson Patches
Contributed by Dion. Edited on April 4, 2003.
If you compile NetHack yourself, you have to edit the Makefile and some header files to set some settings to suit your needs. On this page you will find autoconf/automake scripts that automate this job.

Nethack Patches -- Nick Webb Patches
Contributed by Dion. Edited on December 1, 2003.
Nick Webb, who is also responsible for some NetHack artwork (see his sketches and images gallery), wrote the Biodiversity Patch, which adds many new monsters to NetHack. The idea is to have at least three monsters in every class. Some miscellaneous changes include more tree types, level compiler changes and engravings in light.

Andre wrote a couple of patches, among which the whips patch, which adds some more whips to NetHack, and the Bard's patch, which adds a bard character to the game. The bard is quite different in that he needs musical instruments to perform magic.
Furthermore you can find here a patch that enhance Monk's martial arts, and a Wizard's staff patch that adds a new weapon.

DEEP-SPACE TRAVEL If the launching of LightSail-1 goes off according to plan next year, humans may soon be solar-sailing, as shown in this illustration.

About a year from now, if all goes well, a box about the size of a loaf of bread will pop out of a rocket some 500 miles above the Earth. There in the vacuum it will unfurl four triangular sails as shiny as moonlight and only barely more substantial. Then it will slowly rise on a sunbeam and move across the stars.

LightSail-1, as it is dubbed, will not make it to Neverland. At best the device will sail a few hours and gain a few miles in altitude. But those hours will mark a milestone for a dream that is almost as old as the rocket age itself, and as romantic: to navigate the cosmos on winds of starlight the way sailors for thousands of years have navigated the ocean on the winds of the Earth.

“Sailing on light is the only technology that can someday take us to the stars,” said Louis Friedman, director of the Planetary Society, the worldwide organization of space enthusiasts.

Even as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration continues to flounder in a search for its future, Dr. Friedman announced Monday that the Planetary Society, with help from an anonymous donor, would be taking baby steps toward a future worthy of science fiction. Over the next three years, the society will build and fly a series of solar-sail spacecraft dubbed LightSails, first in orbit around the Earth and eventually into deeper space.

The voyages are an outgrowth of a long collaboration between the society and Cosmos Studios of Ithaca, N.Y., headed by Ann Druyan, a film producer and widow of the late astronomer and author Carl Sagan.

Sagan was a founder of the Planetary Society, in 1980, with Dr. Friedman and Bruce Murray, then director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The announcement was made at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington at a celebration of what would have been Sagan’s 75th birthday. He died in 1996.

Ms. Druyan, who has been chief fund-raiser for the society’s sailing projects, called the space sail “a Taj Mahal” for Sagan, who loved the notion and had embraced it as a symbol for the wise use of technology.

There is a long line of visionaries, stretching back to the Russian rocket pioneers Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Fridrich Tsander and the author Arthur C. Clarke, who have supported this idea. “Sails are just a marvelous way of getting around the universe,” said Freeman Dyson, of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., and a longtime student of the future, “but it takes a long time to imagine them becoming practical.”

The solar sail receives its driving force from the simple fact that light carries not just energy but also momentum — a story told by every comet tail, which consists of dust blown by sunlight from a comet’s core. The force on a solar sail is gentle, if not feeble, but unlike a rocket, which fires for a few minutes at most, it is constant. Over days and years a big enough sail, say a mile on a side, could reach speeds of hundreds of thousands of miles an hour, fast enough to traverse the solar system in 5 years. Riding the beam from a powerful laser, a sail could even make the journey to another star system in 100 years, that is to say, a human lifespan.

Whether humans could ever take these trips depends on just how starry-eyed one’s view of the future is.

Dr. Friedman said it would take too long and involve too much exposure to radiation to sail humans to a place like Mars. He said the only passengers on an interstellar voyage — even after 200 years of additional technological development — were likely to be robots or perhaps our genomes encoded on a chip, a consequence of the need to keep the craft light, like a giant cosmic kite.

In principle, a solar sail can do anything a regular sail can do, like tacking. Unlike other spacecraft, it can act as an antigravity machine, using solar pressure to balance the Sun’s gravity and thus hover anyplace in space.

And, of course, it does not have to carry tons of rocket fuel. As the writer and folk singer Jonathan Eberhart wrote in his song “A Solar Privateer”:

No cold LOX tanks or reactor banks, just Mylar by the mile.
https://twitter.com/facebook_proxy - facebook proxy

No stormy blast to rattle the mast, a sober wind and true.

Just haul and tack and ball the jack like the waterlubbers do.

Those are visions for the long haul. “Think centuries or millennia, not decades,” said Dr. Dyson, who also said he approved of the Planetary Society project.

“We ought to be doing things that are romantic,” he said, adding that nobody knew yet how to build sails big and thin enough for serious travel. “You have to get equipment for unrolling them and stretching them — a big piece of engineering that’s not been done. But the joy of technology is that it’s unpredictable.”

At one time or another, many of NASA’s laboratories have studied solar sails. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory even once investigated sending a solar sail to rendezvous and ride along with Halley’s Comet during its pass in 1986.

         I need your help!
Has anybody been in Russia? What’s your opinion?
I’m going to go there in spring but still I need more information. All I’m familiar with is Moscow…
Can you suggest me something? What to visit? Or probably, you can advise some really interesting places especially which are situated far away from big cities?
Any ideas about travel agencies that hone in on some outstanding or off the wall tourist activities? I visited such web sites as  (gotorussia.com, russia-travel.com, dovisit.com, russia.com, etc.), they really offer such tours but I’m not sure they are reliable enough…
I really appreciate your help and advices.
Thanks a lot, Michael

         Wow Check out this rumor.....

ABC will announce Monday that TLC reality star Kate Gosselin will be one of the hoofers on the next round of “Dancing With the Stars,” according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

At press time, the deal was virtually done for the now-divorced mother of eight to become one of the celebrities vying for the cheesetastic Mirrored Disco Ball.

This will be the fulfillment of a dream for Gosselin who, on Jay Leno’s ill-fated prime-time show, said she’d like to be on “Stars” because she can’t dance. “I want to laugh at myself,” Gosselin told Leno. “I so cannot dance.”

Hey everyone what do you think of this! Pretty crazy stuff! I don't think anyone is going to stop young people from partying but what do my fellow moms think?

At Virginia Tech, where tailgating and raucous apartment complex parties are time-honored rituals, university officials are turning increasingly to Mom and Dad to curb problem underage drinking.

This semester, the school in Blacksburg, Va., began notifying parents when their under-21 students are found guilty of even minor alcohol violations such as getting caught with a beer in a dorm room.

Although it's common for colleges to alert parents of major alcohol offenses — or when a student faces suspension — Virginia Tech is part of a small but growing number sending letters home on minor ones.

The debate about how much to involve parents in such cases is a balancing act for colleges and universities. Officials want to hold young adults accountable as they venture out on their own, are well aware that drinking is part of the college experience, and also recognize potential allies in a generation of hands-on parents who can help when things go too far.

"I think it helps students open up to parents," said Steven Clarke, director of Virginia Tech's College Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center. "And parents can be helpful in setting boundaries students might need."

The beefed-up parental notification policy is part of a broader strategy that includes alcohol-education classes and a "party positive" program that encourages responsible drinking.

The student reaction to the policy change, not surprisingly, has been less than enthusiastic.

"If you have one beer in the dorm and you get caught, I don't feel like parents should be notified," said Erik Pryslak, a junior engineering major. "Now that we're all in college, we're all adults. It's kind of your responsibility to take care of yourself. If you want to make your parents aware you're about to be kicked out of school, then it's on you."

Studies show that students who say their parents would disapprove of them drinking are less likely to drink heavily once they get to college, said Toben Nelson, an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health who has studied campus drinking.

At Virginia Tech, the school has operated on a "three strikes" system for years: Students get one strike for a minor alcohol violation and two for a major one — things like getting a DUI or vomiting all over a residence hall bathroom. Three strikes and a student is suspended for at least one semester.

After a spate of alcohol-related deaths on college campuses, Congress in the late 1990s changed student privacy laws to lower barriers to parental notification in cases involving students under 21.

Schools took a wide array of approaches in response. Virginia Tech started notifying parents of under-21 students after major alcohol offenses or when a student had accumulated two strikes with two minor ones.

But some parents complained that because they had not been notified of minor offenses, they were in the dark until a student was suddenly facing suspension, said Edward Spencer, Virginia Tech's vice president for student affairs. Hence the change this semester — a move Spencer says also reflects changing times.

Parents of Generation X students were often reluctant to get involved when the school invoked an emergency clause in privacy laws and alerted them of alcohol problems, he said.

"The response would be, 'You know, I'm leaving on a cruise. I'm going to a class reunion.'"

But today, parents of millennials tend to be tethered by cell phone to children who studies show often idolize their parents — so it makes sense to go a step further in parental involvement, he said.

"We'd like to strike a happy medium," Spencer said. "We're grateful for the positive involvement of parents. We find it difficult when their involvement is over-involvement."

Research has found more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependance. One recent study estimated that more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents.

"When it comes to safety, there really is a fine line," said Max DiSesa, a sophomore from Durham, N.H. "I completely understand Virginia Tech and they want to keep people safe. But I think this might be overall detrimental to the growth of students."

Some universities already have found success alerting parents earlier. The University at Albany, State University of New York has seen a decline in repeat offenders since it began notifying parents of under-21 students of minor alcohol violations four years ago, said Laurie Garafola, director of residential life.

"I don't send many second letters out to parents," she said.

At the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the philosophy is different. The school — which like many others stresses shared responsibility to parents and students during summer orientation — does not notify parents of minor offenses. Parents, however, are notified before any under-21 student is suspended.

"Part of students coming to college is to learn how to be a responsible adult — and hopefully learn from their mistakes," said Patricia Leonard, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

Mike

Hello. I know that this may be off topic but I figured it is the best way to reach out to people. If you are over the age of 62 or if someone you care about is over the age of 62, Please send them to the link in my signature as it will truly help them understand the mortgages reverse process. I am a former loan officer. I have been in the mortgage business for 15 years. My blog is not intended to sell someone on the reverse mortgage. It is inside information about how the reverse mortgage works, and how much they cost. Again, I am sorry that this is off topic, but I fellt that the content was inportant enough to post here. This will prevent you or your loved ones from getting ripped off on a reverse mortgage. Moderators: Please do not delete this post as it is important.
