body get me a scrollAnd I was gazing on the surges prone,
With many a scalding tear and many a groan,
When at my feet emerg'd an old man's hand,
Grasping this scroll, and this same slender wand.
I knelt with pain--reached out my hand--had grasp'd
Those treasures--touch'd the knuckles--they unclasp'd--
I caught a finger: but the downward weight
O'erpowered me--it sank. Then 'gan abate
The storm, and through chill aguish gloom outburst
The comfortable sun. I was athirst
To search the book, and in the warming air
Parted its dripping leaves with eager care.
Strange matters did it treat of, and drew on
My soul page after page, till well-nigh won
Into forgetfulness; when, stupefied,
I read these words, and read again, and tried
My eyes against the heavens, and read again.

of charging. And kill that dragonIn the West the dragon was the natural enemy of man. Although
preferring to live in bleak and desolate regions, whenever it
was seen among men it left in its wake a trail of destruction
and disease. Yet any attempt to slay this beast was a perilous
undertaking. For the dragon's assailant had to contend
not only with clouds of sulphurous fumes pouring from its fire
breathing nostrils, but also with the thrashings of its tail,
the most deadly part of its serpent-like body.
[ Mythical Beasts by Deirdre Headon (The Leprechaun Library) ]

"One whom the dragons will speak with," he said, "that is a
dragonlord, or at least that is the center of the matter. It's
not a trick of mastering the dragons, as most people think.
Dragons have no masters. The question is always the same, with
a dragon: will he talk to you or will he eat you? If you can
count upon his doing the former, and not doing the latter, why
then you're a dragonlord."

Poor for first and last panel. That kind of language is inappropriate.

I think in the first panel it was intended to be literal. Dogley is a dogA domestic animal, the _tame dog_ (_Canis familiaris_), of
which numerous breeds exist. The male is called a dog,
while the female is called a bitch. Because of its known
loyalty to man and gentleness with children, it is the
world's most popular domestic animal. It can easily be
trained to perform various tasks.

"Damn" being inappropriate? Just because religious types don't like it? So what counts as a bad word is based upon keeping religious people happy? A word is considered inappropriate just to pander to religious people?

(Sorry, but I really hate the hold religions seem to have on whether how we conduct our lives is 'proper' or not, etc).

On a less rant-y note, I also think Dogley is being literal in the first panel.

Feory: "religious people" are a legitimate group. Such a word is looked down upon for its extremely negative connotations used in everyday conversation. Since the meaning has not changed, it is inappropriate to use it in that manner.

Mantar: Make up your own material. Plagiarism is bad.

Grognor, I couldn't have said it better. So I didn't.

Slowpoke, I agree. With that last part. Partly.

Nameless, This storyline is starting to get...odd.

Yes - Religious people are a group, not society as a whole. Just because a word offends one group of people, it can't be used? We can't cater to everybody with regards to people finding certain words offensive (and if we did, the phrase "political correctness gone mad" would apply well), so why still for certain groups?

Offensive words are only offensive because we declare them to be; they're not intrinsically offensive, so if stopped caring, no words would be offensive, which would be a much better solution than 'you can't say this, or this, or this etc'.

Ofc, this is yesterday's comic now, so probably you won't even read this, but it wouldn't be right to say this in today's comments.

Feory: the n-word. Suddenly your argument is worthless.

Mantar: Since you gave no indication that you wereIn 1573, the Parliament of Dole published a decree, permitting
the inhabitants of the Franche-Comte to pursue and kill a
were-wolf or loup-garou, which infested that province,
"notwithstanding the existing laws concerning the chase."
The people were empowered to "assemble with javelins,
halberds, pikes, arquebuses and clubs, to hunt and pursue the
said were-wolf in all places where they could find it, and to
take, burn, and kill it, without incurring any fine or other
penalty." The hunt seems to have been successful, if we may
judge from the fact that the same tribunal in the following
year condemned to be burned a man named Giles Garnier, who
ran on all fours in the forest and fields and devoured little
children, "even on Friday." The poor lycanthrope, it appears,
had as slight respect for ecclesiastical feasts as the French
pig, which was not restrained by any feeling of piety from
eating infants on a fast day.

How so? Words only have power because we give them that power. However, I do see that everyone all ceasing to find 'bad' words offensive is unfeasible, so from a practical sense, my argument is pointless.

The words that offend me most are the whining about "I H8 U RELIGION FOR RUIN MY LIFE" in the comments. Did I stumble into SlashDot by accident?

The strip wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. I might just be getting bored with the storyline, I tire easily these days!

I didn't mean to offend, regardless.

If anybody reads this. The "n-word" is exactly where Feory's argument applies in greatest force, and where this behavior makes us look most ridiculous as a society.

I suppose I'm not helping by not saying it, but getting run out of town here would be tiresome.

Actually, even the "n-word" falls under the same umbrella as other offensive words. It is derived from the word "Negro," which comes directly from "niger," which is the Latin word for black. (Incidentally, the country of Nigeria is named from the same Latin root word.) It is only offensive because years of using it in a pejorative sense have made it so. It's not the word itself, but the usage and the reaction that make it profane/offensive.

Ok, this is stupid. Are you kids? Did you skip highschool? What? What manner of foolishness is it that a group reading a webcomic about NetHack could possibly feel insulted by two mild swears? You'd have to have been raised in a monastery for these words to be anything but normal to you.(Or like, raised in Russia or something, but this board is in English so I'm speaking to English speakers, of course. Just pick foreign swears of your choice for my argument, if you wish.)

Comic for ages 4 and under!" But this is NetHack! If you're playing this game, surely you're at least a teenager? Probably much older. This game requires, if nothing else, a degree of intelligence that implies the maturity necessary to handle "harsh" language. Are you insulted anyway? Then get the hell over yourself. Nobody cares about your feelings, much less people on the internet. Adapt or suffer, that's life. Deal with personalities that oppose your own, because a failure to do so will destroy you.
